The Role of Stress

Although the psychological term of stress has been around for less than one hundred years, the push for more rapid and more complex lifestyles has made it acutely present in people. While everyone must deal with some stress in their lives, the amount of everyday pressures is certainly on the rise. The problem with these forces is that they are not only in a person’s head as they result in many different symptoms of anxiety and other issues. Some possible examples of these symptoms could include acne, diarrhea, eating problems, using drugs, and body pains. If left untreated, it could become full anxiety disorders that can seriously affect the well being of the person.

Technically, the idea of stress is any demands that are placed on a person, whether it be from mental, physical, or emotional sources. In addition, the demands can also be imaginary and still produce the same feelings that come from real demands. All of these needs that must be met combine to form the level of stress that a person is experiencing. As not all humans are built the same way, some can tolerate much higher levels than others and can maintain positive mental health while under heavy pressures.

Stress can come from a variety of different sources and researchers are finding out that there may be even more contributing factors than previously thought. In a recent study of mothers that had high stress levels during their pregnancy, the children were at a higher likelihood of needing depression treatment or help for anxiety disorders at some point in their life. In addition to the common social issues that are sources of anxiety, other things like bright lights or loud sounds can be considered to be sources.
