HN caught up with the adorable Michael Urie (“Ugly Betty,” “The Tempermentals”) at the 21st Annual GLAAD Awards in New York City this weekend. “The Tempermentals” was nominated for “Outstanding New York Theater: Broadway & Off-Broadway,” and although the GLAAD Award went to “A Boy and His Soul” by Colman Domingo, Urie was gracious enough to talk exclusively to HN:

1. In the Internet age, how do you get guys excited about going to the theatre?

You go to the theatre to escape your Internet, to escape your phone and your twitter. Because it’s a place where you cannot have them. You have to turn them off, and if you do not, and if it rings, you will be shunned. The theatre is one of the last true arts. Performing arts is pure. It happens in front of you. You cannot get what we give you on a stage on your phone. The theatre, the world of dance, opera, live performance and music is your escape.

2. What’s been your favorite part of the whole ‘Tempermentals’ experience?

I think it’s that we keep moving. We’re now in our third venue. We did it for 40 people a night, and we did it for 99 people a night. Now we do it for 200 people a night, and we keep filling the house. It’s growing. And that’s a really nice feeling. It’s really nice. I knew it was good the first time I read it 6 years ago. So now that we’re doing it still and it’s still getting all this attention it’s very cool.

3. At HN we write a lot about being a gentleman. Not like a stuffy, Jane Austin one, but a modern one. What’s a good quality in a gentleman?

Table manners. Not in and old fashioned way, but in a keep your mouth closed when you’re eating way. Figure out what fork is for what, when you put your napkin in your lap. I think table manners are pretty important. The art of the table manner, I think that’s gentlemanly.

HN friend and contributor, Nick Burd, makes the OUT 100 List this week. Full disclosure, Nick Burd is perhaps one of the smartest and chillest guys we’ve ever met– so we’re really excited for him. Read more about Burd’s novel, “The Vast Fields of Ordinaryhere. Purchase a copy here

When Burd’s coming-of-age (and coming-out) novel The Vast Fields of Ordinary debuted in May it proved anything but typical—The New York Times hailed it as “fascinating and dreamy” and “the best kind of first novel.” An alum of the University of Iowa, the New School, and the indie rock band Burn Disco Burn, 29-year-old Burd (right) is a program manager at the literary/human rights organization PEN American Center and is now at work on a new novel he calls “a noirish tale about a gay grifter in Recession-era New York City.”

Other HN favorites include Brad Goreski (“Rachel Zoe Project”), Michael Urie (“Ugly Betty”), poet Mark Doty, Adam Lambert (“American Idol”), Edmund White, Felice Picano, Andrew Holleran, Pedro Almodóvar and, of course, the charming Neil Patrick Harris. [Source: OUT]

Why is tonight so important to you?
“The first and foremost reason, I’m here to support Mitchell Gold and his partner Bob Williams. That means the world to me, because we grew up together–and [Mitchell] is a very important person in my life. That’s number one,” explained the legendary “Ugly Betty” star, Judith Light – who looked stunning in an all black ensemble.

“Also, I’ve been with GLAAD since the very beginning — when we used to do these events in small Hotel rooms with 10 about tables,” quipped the impeccable Angela Bower…. (Ahem) I mean, Ms. Light.

“So to watch the growth of an organization like this and see the kind of work that it’s been doing through the years is very heart warming for me and extremely important for the community.”

*Please forgive our gushing, but this is Angela Effing Bower we’re talking about here. Forgive our start-struckness, but Judith Light is incredibly charismatic and poised in person.

Here’s what I learned while watching the Ugly Betty premiere on Friday night:

1. Michael Urie and Becki Newton must have done something really serious to piss off Emmy voters. (Kristin Chenowith? Really?)

2. TV happens on Friday nights and not all of it stars Jennifer Love Hewitt.

and 3. Hundred-dollar lunches, private gyms, and access to company Towncars are all part of a day’s work at a major magazine publisher because the industry is thriving!

1 and 2? Yes. 3? Yeah… No.
