On Sunday evening a crowd of approximately 150 people gathered at Pier 45 to mourn the death of Jorge Steven Mercado, a 19-year-old gay Puerto Rican teen who was brutally murdered, dismembered and partially burned on the evening of November 13.

One of 20 such vigils held across the country, many attendants were of Puerto Rican descent, holding up posters and fliers professing solidarity and sporting images of the Boricua flag. Speakers included organizers Scott Anthony Evans, Ronnie KroellKarlo C. and Stephanie Jones, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito, Councilman-elect Danny Domm, GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios, poet Emanuel Xavier, and designer Malan Breton,

The mood was emotional—many people were crying as the speakers professed their disappointment and feelings of loss. The brutal nature of the killing and the insensitive reaction on Puerto Rican television by police investigator Ángel Rodríguez Colón, who said (as translated into English), “These types of people, when they enter this lifestyle and go out into the streets know that this could happen.”

The details of the crime are slim: accused killer Martinez Matos picked up Mercado, who was dressed in drag, in the town of Caguas and drove him to the nearby of Cidra. Upon discovering Mercado was a man, he flew into a rage, killing and decapitating Mercado before burning his dismembered body.

“You have to remember, Jorge is our son, he is our child,” Barrios told the crowd on Sunday. Others nodded or spoke in agreement, “That’s right.”

Although Puerto Rico is no stranger to gay male lifestyle, statements like Colón’s demonstrate that attitudes that remain in Caribbean and Latino cultures towards masculinity and the archaic gender dichotomy many people subscribe to. The statement was offensive because it blames the victim, suggesting that violating the gender boundaries is an invitation to violence.

The vigil, which was followed by a memorial service at St. Luke in the Fields in Greenwich village, was as much a protest against violence and gender hegemony as a memorial for the all-too-young Mercado—taken from his adoring mother because he chose to express the difference he felt within him.

Ronnie_Kroell_Driftwood

Reality TV star, fashion model, and GLBT rights activist, Ronnie Kroell, sat down with I’m From Driftwood’s Nathan Menske about coming out to his mother (or better yet being caught by his mother) in Chicago, having his 78-year-old grandmother defend him, and coming to terms with being gay. Watch the video after the jump and hear more stories at www.ImFromDriftwood.com.

With perfect weather atop the garden at 230 5th Ave, GLAAD imported a hot slice of Venice Beach to Manhattan for its Summer Series event. While honorary co-chairs Jill Zarin and Countess LuAnn de Lesseps circulated with other notables including Lisa Lampanelli, Nick Adams, Jack Mackenroth, and DeMarco Majors, the Andrew Christian-clad models kept the crowd at a crest. Other treats included dominatrix/balloon artist Mistress B, Zarin’s BFF Brad, and a cute magician whose two-fingered metal fork bending techniques left us wondering what he could do with all ten digits. Check out more photos and the list of celebs in attendance after the jump.

Michael Urie

Ugly Betty's Michael Urie

Catty bitches, flamboyant gentlemen, and potty-mouthed comediennes, oh my!

The Real Housewives of New York City, Jane Krakowski, Michael Urie, Lisa Lampanelli Join GLAAD at Summer Rooftop Event, Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the 20th Floor Roof Top Garden at 230 Fifth Ave.  This sounds like an event that’s not to be missed. In addition to learning etiquette from the Countess, and avoiding talking upholestery with Jill Zarin, there will be wine, cocktails, and sexy boys (Ronnie Kroell!)  in swimwear — the theme is Venice Beach. Need we say more? For tickets check out GLAAD or more info on Facebook.

Ronnie Kroell on the Cover of Instinct

BEYOND THE BROMANCE – One of our most favorite people in the whole wide world, Ronnie Kroell, is on the cover of Instinct’s September Fall Fashion issue. The issue isn’t out yet, but since Ronnie and I are BFF’s, I grabbed it from his Facebook. You’ll remember the all-American Ronnie from Bravo’s Make Me A Supermodel — How could you forget?

Ronnie said this on his MySpace:

I want to thank INSTINCT MAGAZINE for their support of my efforts as I follow my dreams in the modeling industry and being true advocates of my work in the community. They truly are a class act and one of my favorite magazines.

So despite his debonair good looks, Ronnie remains a beautiful person — which is something we can’t often say about dudes who strut down the runway.

Remember how I told you about my boyfriend Ronnie? No. Not that one. The other one. The super-sexy, totally out Ronnie Kroell. Well, he’s auctioning off a pair of Kanye-inspired sunglasses to raise awareness about 4+1 Productions, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to “Bridging Diversity.”

And these aren’t just any old pair of designer rag-wear; Ronnie himself rocked these babies on the set of BRAVO’s “Make Me a Supermodel”. And it’s a two-for one special — because the winning bidder gets not only the shades, but also a personalized, autographed head-shot. (The platinum frame for your mantle, however, is not included.)

More about 4+1 Productions and a close-up after the jump.

Dog Fight — For Democrats choosing a nominee has been nothing if not a hot mess — with Hillary and Barack tearing at each other’s exhausted limbs amidst those blood stained blue and white picket signs. Business as usual right? So, with all that’s going wrong with our political system, I was super stoked when my BFF (he doesn’t know it yet) and model, Ronnie Kroell, posted pictures of his gorgeous smiling face next to Bill and Hill on his Facebook page. Fingers crossed that Ronnie will call me tonight urging me to vote.

Ronnie Kroell. You win nothing (frowny face). Make Me a Supermodel is the closest thing to a successful Mister America Pageant this country has seen thus far. Do you remember that other Bravo male-model show Manhunt with models sky diving in thongs and combat boots? How fast can you spell disaster? So it’s too bad that “gay activist” Ronnie Kroell came in second to the pretty if not nasally, farm-bred, but less stimulating Holly Kiser. I still love you Ronnie!!! You’ll always be my number one supermodel. This clip comes from one of my new favorite things outzone.tv.com.
