The great master of iconic post-war fashion photography, Richard Avedon, is the subject of an ongoing retrospective exhibit now open at the International Center of Photography.  The exhibit covers Avedon’s long career, beginning with Harper’s Bazaar and through his tenure at Vogue, The New Yorker and beyond.  Over 200 pieces of his work are on display, including highly erotic images from his advertising collaboration beginning in the 1980s with fashion designer Gianni Versace.  His considerable influence was first felt as a result of groundbreaking exploration of less static poses and more exuberant expressions in his models during a time when most fashion images were comparatively sterile.  He was also a pioneer in fighting for diversity in the ranks of models at a time when non-Caucasian models were taboo.  The exhibit runs through September 6th.

Hedi Slimane - Vogue Homme Nippon

The cover shot for the extremely special debut of Vogue Homme Nippon is out, the issue being extremely noteworthy as it’s inspired directly by Hedi Slimane himself. It’s one of Hedi’s first musings in fashion since he left Dior Homme in early 2007. Hedi shot the cover, an accomplished photographer certainly, and who knows what other goodies are in store. The issue comes out September 10th and expect a full review from Homo-Neurotic.

But let’s not forget his wonderful work for Vman, where he also made the cover image as well as rather nice spread of the Vman Model search winner Petey.

Yeah or “neigh”? Sorry I couldn’t help myself. The new ad campaign for Wrangler by superstar photographer Ryan McGinley offers a whole new perspective on Equus. There’s also a video, shot ala National Geographic. Do we like? [PDN]

Linda Evangelista, V Magazine

It’s been ages since I picked up a bound magazine, and with the launch V online I may never have to. Reading The Atlantic or The New Yorker online is tough enough. So many words right? But a mostly visual book, like V or Vogue, is better suited for the vast, never depleted web — where the notion of disposable imagery is much more apparent than any printed matter. I’m less distracted by the cheap, practically translucent paper that some rags use, or worried that a signature is off register, or that color reproduction doesn’t match. Last night, sometime between 2 and 4 am, I sat a my computer hypnotized by the fashion spreads in V online. Apparently photographs of other-worldly models in other-worldly attire look better without the glossy paper, or the CMYK, or the nostalgic notion of the center fold. (Photo: Sebastian Faena)
