2009 has been a tough year to say the least, and fashion has been no exception. But maybe it is because of the turbulence that this year the folly of an industry has shown some real mettle: assuaging our anxiety with spectacle, forcing innovation on the complacent, charging ahead towards the new — Here are the top 9 fashion moments of 2009, just in time as a new decade dawns…

The 10th issue of Fantastic Man for autumn/winter 2009 is out on magazine stands now. It features a dashing Ewan McGregor on the cover. Along with a story on the accomplished actor is a spread with Vogue’s dandy-at-large Hamish Bowels, an interview with Chanel’s cosmetic creative director Peter Philips, a series of remarkable style stories, and so much more.

Developed by the same duo that brought you BUTT, Gert Jonkers and Jop Van Bennekom have found the most plausible solution for the magazine and publishing fiasco. Rather than put out a disposable monthly with ill considered design and content, they present a tome of aesthetic and tactile pleasure twice a year (though I would be even more pleased if it were quarterly). From the art direction to the fashion editorial to the writing, and even the paper quality, the magazine is flawless through and through.

Glimpsed in the pages of the newest Fantastic Man:

“I try to take my PA everywhere. She takes care of the buzzing iPhone, the restaurant bill, and she notes things that might otherwise escape one’s attention. Like the other day, when she overheard a conversation at the table next to us: apparently HEDI SLIMANE will be back in fashion next spring.

What are the 10 quintessential items that every self-respecting, bow-tie sporting dandy-about-town owns? We solicited the advice of dandy experts Matt Fox and Enrique Crame III of FineandDandyShop.com for help.

10. Three tailored suits: one navy blue, one dark grey, and one brown.  Those three suits combined with some great accessories will triple your wardrobe.

9. A copy of E.B. White’s Here Is New York. White’s 1949 essay is the quintessential love letter to New York City, a very nostalgic view of the most dandy of all cities.  White discusses subjects such as the three types of New Yorkers (those who were born in New York City, those who commute to the city, and those who are from somewhere else who move to New York in quest of something); the fact that no matter where you live in the city, within a couple of blocks you can find a delicatessen, dry cleaner, a drug store, a haberdasher, etc.; and how the city empties on the weekend in the summer.  It’s a terrific glimpse into the New York City of 60 years ago.

8. The following sites bookmarked: Valet Mag, What I Saw Today, and We Could Grow Up Together.

  • Valet Mag is the quintessential go-to men’s site for style, grooming, and culture.
  • Our friend and illustrator Richard Haines’ blog What I Saw Today is a collection of sketches of guys he sees each day on the street, in coffee shops, on the subway, etc.  It provides a constant source of style inspiration.
  • Our friend Kwannam Chu is a Hong Kong fashion photographer and his blog We Could Grow Up Together is an assortment of his photos.  We love his style of photography and the beauty he captures in his photos.  From his fashion jobs to photos of everyday objects like a bouquet of tulips or a vintage find from a flea market.

7. A bicycle, preferably a vintage one. A bike is the ideal dandy mode of transportation.  See the sites, get a little exercise.  And it’s good for the environment!  Also, it’s fun to see people’s reaction to see a guy dressed up all dandy riding a bike.
