FAG-A-ZINE | Christopher Schulz and I met at the Chelsea Art Book Fair. He was toting copies of his wordless magazine PINUPS in a vintage Louis Vuitton zip-up portfolio.

Pinups is a triannual publication that features (usually) one male nude pictorial per issue. There are no words—just an exaggeration of the classic centerfold. Each magazine exists in book form but can be taken apart and tiled to reveal a 32” x 70” image.
I’d seen him around and had heard about PINUPS from friends. He seemed aloof and uninterested in meeting me. But somehow I convinced him to do an interview. It seemed fitting to meet at Nowhere Bar, where PINUPS launched earlier this year. I wasn’t expecting to find him so affable and forthcoming, but after one margarita on the rocks and little Beyonce on the jukebox he had me hooked.
HN: Hi Chris, I’ve to tell you. I was worried about this interview for two reasons. 1. You seem like a private person. And I thought, “I’m going to ask him questions and he’s going to have one word answers.” 2. You’re a dead-ringer for ex-boyfriend.
CS: I want to see a picture! I like the discussion because I’ve done other interviews and it’s always been in emails. And I find I’m more formal because I can edit myself. I do much better in conversation.
HN: When I first saw you dancing here at Nowhere with your boyfriend, I kind of wanted to punch you in the face a little bit.
CS: Really? You where like “Who is he with?” Oh, that reminds me. I came here on Halloween night, and this guy comes in wearing this outfit—sort of like a fitted onesie piece…kind of like a burlap sack—but fitted. And he has this heart right here and these spikes through him.
And I’m like: “What are you supposed to be?”
He’s like “ Oh I’m um So and So Voodoo Doll.”
And I’m like “Who’s that?”
He’s like: “My ex-boyfriend. He’s here.”
I was so into his costume and he won the contest—which I thought he deserved because it was such a good costume.
