It’s a peculiar endeavor considering that the internet has come to dominate the porn industry’s distribution and viewership, hotel ordered porn seems counter-intuitive if not a lost cause. Yet BUTT, a magazine that has been at the vanguard of proving the mettle of traditional print in the age of the internet, has a knack for showing the wonders of what an honest perspective and keen thinking can do in defiance of all the hype.

In the tradition of forgoing the conventions of MSG* culture, the team at BUTT has put together a series of films that aren’t as immediately obvious as Bel Ami lovers or Falcon studs. Rather, they pooled from their own individual tastes and connoisseurship developing a range of erotic preferences representing the best of their genre. Whether it is forceful brutality or a gruff papichulo that gets you off, there’s something to illicit the stirrings of horny ambition for everyone. [Possibly NSFW]

J.C.M. ALERT | Director John Cameron Mitchell (”Hedwig,” “Shortbus”) will introduce the film “Entertaining Mr. Sloane” on Thursday night at the Tribeca 92|Y as part of their Part of the series Queer/Art/Film. The 94-minute film was directed by Douglas Hickox in 1970.

JCM, who is currently in post production on his next dramatic film “Rabbit Hole” (due in 2010) starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, had this to say about Thursday night’s screening:

“Entertaining Mr. Sloane is the unsung black comedy gem of Swinging Sixties-era British film. Closely adapted from Joe Orton’s 1964 hit play, it concerns a certain young libidinous lodger fought over by a wacky middle-aged brother and sister. It’s Pinter crossed with Dame Edna. It combined the broad, skeptical music hall humor I learned from my youth in a Scottish Catholic boarding school with the giddy homo outrage I felt coming out in the AIDS-benighted 80’s.

Orton, the openly queer, rudely promiscuous bomb-thrower of the British stage, was all the rage in the mid 60’s to the point of being commissioned to write a screenplay for the Beatles (sadly unrealized). Some folks aspire to play Hamlet and Lear. The old men in Beckett and Orton are the only roles I still feel the need to essay. And maybe Kath in Sloane, though it’s impossible to imagine topping Beryl Reid’s tour de force in this film.”

Curated by BUTT magazine contributing editor Adam Baran and filmmaker Ira Sachs, the Queer/Art/Film series invites some of the most exciting, innovative (and homosexual) artists from the dance/performance/film/visual and literary arts to present and discuss their favorite films, in rare prints, on the big screen.

DIRTY SOUTH // BUTT BANG 2009 closed with a booty-shaking bonanza on Friday night with a steaming hot performance by New Orleans’ own Sissy Nobby and Big Freedia. Their music is a regional flavor of hip-hop and dance commonly known as Bounce: a hybrid of uber-sexualized, rapid beats, synth drums, and call and response.

You could literally feel the energy radiating off the stage — and from the pics — the audience couldn’t resist the guys raucous dance moves. Sissy and Freedia are both considered Sissy Rap music pioneers, though the genre of Bounce music is mostly dominated by Take Fo’ recording artists like Choppa (Also see Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up” and Beyonce’s “Get Me Bodied” for more mainstream Bounce influenced music).

Not a whole lot has been written about Bounce music outside of New Orleans, but you can read this article in the London Guardian for links to several Bounce bloggers. It’s interesting to read how much acceptance these guys get from their music peers even amidst an often homophobic rap scene.

Especially since Sissy Nobby’s lyrics aren’t shy about sex and homosexuality. For instance, this line from “And I Live,” …I know my nigga is hot and he got a big dick. Or this lyric from the track “Consequences,” …I’m the first lady / I’m his one and only hoe / Who you is: nobody cares and nobody knows.

Who can argue with that? Check out Sissy Nobby’s space: myspace.com/sissynobbyy or follow him minute-by-minute on twitter: twitter.com/SISSYNOBBY.

UPDATE // Salem front man John Holland has one of those teen-prostitute, crack-addict stories that you read about in Dennis Cooper novels. So it made sense that he appeared on stage dressed in white, pale-faced, through a veil of smoke surrounded by band mates Jack Donoghue and Heather Marlatt.

For those unfamiliar with Salem, here’s how Holland described the band’s sound to BUTT Magazine:

“Uh, it’s annoying when people try to say shit like ‘Electro/Punk’ blah, blah, blah… , I’m not gonna say it’s not dark…. When Heather sings she sounds angelic, and then when Jack raps he sounds thuggy. …I don’t really know why everyone thinks it’s ‘Goth’.”

San Francisco punk-band Hunx and His Punx kicked off the 2009 Pre-pride BUTT Bang @ Knitting Factory on Friday night. Fans of Hunx remember him from the electropop foursome Gravy Train!!!! (which is seemingly on hiatus). Hunx’s music harkens back to doo-wop and classic rock-n-roll groups like The Ronettes — except dirtier, queerer, and with abs-and-tights instead of beehives. Hunx, the man, is not only cute, but his songs will make you smile. Photos by Miguel “The Spaniard” & Roberto Ochoa.

BORDERLINE NSFW POST-JUMP.

GOOD MORNING GENTS — The 24th issue of BUTT Magazine has landed at an American Apparel near you — and Jake Shears (Yes, that Jake) graces the cover in a photograph by the skinny-silhouette master of rock-n-roll glamour himself, Hedi Slimane. This is, at least, Jake’s second appearance on the pages of BUTT – and perhaps Hedi’s first. Can anyone confirm that? Enjoy these, including a bevy of rarely seen penis drawings from artist Keith Haring (after the JUMP). Herring who died in 1990, would’ve been 50 this year. If you don’t know Keith Haring, bone up here and here. Thanks to the reader to sent these.

KEITH HERRING after the JUMP.

MUNCHIES? |  By now you’ve seen the new ads for Tom Ford’s premiere men’s fragrance, Tom Ford For Men, the photographs are sexy and clever–if not out right porno-licious. But art-porn guru Jeff Koons ain’t got a thing on Tom’s product placement. Photographed by renowned image-maker Terry Richardson, the campaign showcases Ford’s greatest skill: arousal. So, I was more than a little excited, when the latest BUTT magazine landed on my kitchen table. Albeit not their best issue, the back cover ad, however, blew me away. (Mom, if you’re reading this, check out the post below about the cute little gay spy girl instead.) Sadly this version of the ads, isn’t on tomford.com.

From BUTTMAGAZINE.COM: We love the idea of connecting readers and friends of BUTT magazine. That’s why we’re organizing a fun and informal get-together in New York City, this Friday. Hosted by BUTT buddy Michael Bullock and new BUTT interviewee Paul Mpagi Sepuya. Meet new friends, pick up the new issue of BUTT for free. (We’re bringing 50 issues so come early!)

This weekend I hit up the second annual NY Art Book Fair in Chelsea. It was wonderful but unsatisfying. On the one hand, it’s exciting to connect with independent publishers whose author lists aren’t dictated by potential sales on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. It’s great to see books bound in unconventional ways.
