Hands down, the best part of the new Christopher Guest ads for US Census Bureau is Jennifer Coolidge as a wardrobe lady who asks for left-handed scissors to, as Ad Age puts it, “complete the daunting task of costuming every American.” The first and second of five Guest-directed spots about a director trying to take a snapshot of America. The goal is to entice us (the American public) to mail in our census forms. Does Mr. Guest make us want to participate in the census, or does his humor fly over most Americans heads? Watch the clips.

David Agbodji for Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein has quite the history of producing iconic photography as part of their advertising campaigns.  Bruce Weber produced numerous memorable and notorious images for Calvin Klein with the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Sabato, Jr., and launched the career of supermodel Kate Moss.  This year they’ve enlisted Steven Klein to shoot the amazing David Agbodji (Request), who also happens to be a rising photographer himself.  The result… well, I’ll let you judge for yourself.

Growing up we didn’t have access to porn the way kids have nowadays. To quench our manly desires, we resorted to the one tried and true directory of scantily clad male flesh: catalogs. That’s right gents. J.C. Penny, International Male, L.L. Bean all arrived in our mail boxes ripe with underwear models in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Thank god for those catalogs. Well, last week, we received an email from the gents over at UnderGear (formerly International Male). They were kind enough to send us a few behind-the-scene snapshots and this sexy making of video. You’d better believe they know their demographic: the gays. We think they are providing a very important service to young men in America. Men who may have their computers Porn Protected by ParentWare, or who otherwise have restricted access to B&N’s Gay Interest section. Thank you Undergear for your many years of service. Though we despise terms like the Gays, we are forever indebted. Video and pics after the jump.

A strange thing happened while we were watching LOGO staple, “Adam and Steve.” We call it a staple, because “Adam & Steve” is a gay rom-com that is actually good. Parker Posey co-stars, and that’s partially why it’s good, but more on that later. During one of many commercial breaks, we spotted Mario Diaz in the “What’s Your Excuse” ad campaign for Las Vegas. Who is Mario Diaz, you ask? Well, when he’s not starring in TV commercials, he makes up a third of our favorite West Coast electroclash threesome, Dirty Sanchez! Full Disclosure: Every time we hear “Dirty Sanchez” at a bar or club, we do a little dance.

By now we’ve all seen the ads for Chivas Regal blended Scotch whiskey. What you haven’t seen are ads for the product on HN. That needs to change. Are you listening, Mr. Patrick Ricard? For the uninformed, Chivas Brothers, Co., is owned by Pernod Ricard — a French conglomerate that recently purchased Absolut Vodka from the Swedish government. Why is this relevant? Absolut is a huge supporter of gay websites, events, etc. If you attended a GLAAD or OUT or BroadwayBares event in the past year, you’ve partaken in the generosity of Absolute’s parent company. (Even BeBe Sahara is joining the bandwagon). With so much gay marketing taking place at Pernod Ricard, why doesn’t Chivas Regal bring their “chivalrous” marketing dollars to homo-neurotic?

Why is tonight so important to you?
“The first and foremost reason, I’m here to support Mitchell Gold and his partner Bob Williams. That means the world to me, because we grew up together–and [Mitchell] is a very important person in my life. That’s number one,” explained the legendary “Ugly Betty” star, Judith Light – who looked stunning in an all black ensemble.

“Also, I’ve been with GLAAD since the very beginning — when we used to do these events in small Hotel rooms with 10 about tables,” quipped the impeccable Angela Bower…. (Ahem) I mean, Ms. Light.

“So to watch the growth of an organization like this and see the kind of work that it’s been doing through the years is very heart warming for me and extremely important for the community.”

*Please forgive our gushing, but this is Angela Effing Bower we’re talking about here. Forgive our start-struckness, but Judith Light is incredibly charismatic and poised in person.

A QUICKIE | The premier GLAAD Media Awards in Advertising took place Tuesday, October 27th at New World Stages in New York City. Actor Alan Cumming (he’s done everything from “Josie and the Pussycats” to “Cabaret” on Broadway), who received the Vito Russo Award at the 16th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2005, hosted the event along with the brilliantly funny Bryan Batt (Mad Men) and the dapper Jay Manuel (America’s Next Top Model).

But more on those three later. We spoke with all three gents — and we’ll have exclusive quotes and video later tonight — for now here’s a list of the winners and the official press release below the fold. Did we mention that “Ugly Betty’s Judith Light was also there? She was looking fabulous BTW.

Do you have what it takes to intern for Scott Schuman? The influential fashion blog is seeking interns for fall, and we found the craigslist ad to prove it.

Behold the latest ad campaign for the Milan-based jeans label Takeshy Kurosawa featuring the accessory du jour: mannequins. Last week Lagerfeld was playing with them — and if the trend continues, we’ll have to go purchase our own dummy to experiment with. This particular campaign shot by for “L’uomo Vogue” combines the two biggest trends in fashion advertising of late: mannequins and bondage. Don’t believe us? Check out the recent editorials by Steven Klein for “Arena+” and “Vogue Hommes Japan” or Karim Sadli for “Dazed & Confused,” or Karl Lagerfeld for “Elle Italia” or… somebody page Kim Cattrall.

Crack is Back | Tom Ford, has sexed-up any project he’s ever worked on — and his latest advertising campaign for Fall 2009 eye wear is no different. In many ways, he’s a brilliant marketer — despite, what you believe about his fashion aesthetics or film credentials. He knows what images will leave the biggest impression, and in this case – it’s all about the booty. Check out the slightly NSFW images after the jump. Model Jon Kortajarena.

gen-ITALIA | With the help of Karl Lagerfeld and surely several hours of post-editing, Baptiste Giabiconi, is transformed into a living mannequin (or man-i-KEN) as we prefer) replete with amorphous genitalia. The spread for the October 2009 issue of Elle Italia explores the Surrealist Movement in art.  Mannequins have long fascinated artists, like this photograph (above) of mannequins in Marcel Duchamp’s 1938 Surrealist Exhibition at Beaux-arts Gallery in Paris — many of these mannequins would later inspire works by Man Ray (pictured below).

ADV-ART // It’s not difficult to admit that advertising images have played an enormous role in the life of this blogger. If I think back to the image-makers who’ve impacted me most you’ll find some obvious names like Chris Cunningham, Matthew Barney, Julian Schnabel (my neighbor!), Julie Taymor, Larry Clark and, perhaps less well-known by fashion outsiders, Juergen Teller. I remember Juergen Teller’s adverts for Marc Jacobs like I remember Nadja Auermann and Claudia Schiffer topless for Versace Jeans Couture (vintage fashion by now). I remember Sofia Coppola in a swimming pool (back when we all believed she’d be the voice of generation Y2K — long before YouTube and Facebook); and Cindy Sherman, Kim Gordon, and Victoria Beckham in that ubiquitous white Marc Jacobs shopping bag; and Rachel Feinstein’s jungle-red lips, loose locks and blonde sable fur coat. Those are the glamour-defining images that will haunt my own sense of beauty long after I stop caring for Tim Hamilton and Rick Owens. Lucky for me, there’s a new book with these such images — Marc Jacobs Advertising 1998 – 2009, by Juergen Teller — available now from Steidl (US $120.00). Let the 90’s nostalgia begin.

And Thank GLAAD It’s Friday on May 29, 2008  for GLAAD’s new networking night for young LGBT professionals hosted by ABSOLUT.

GLAAD announced the launch of its Advertising Media Program last night at a special reception at the Alvin Ailey Studios. The goal of the program is to proactively advance inclusion of the LGBT community in mainstream advertising through advocacy work at advertising agencies and corporate advertising departments. GLAAD will maintain the online library formerly owned by Commercial Closet Association of over 4,000 LGBT-inclusive ads. Representatives from Levis and Wells Fargo were honored for their company’s inclusion of the LGBT community in their advertising as well as their corporate culture. GLAAD also announced they will host their inaugural Advertising Awards this fall in New York. (And we’ll be there.)

Thank GLAAD It’s Friday: Join GLAAD on May 29 for a networking night for young LGBT professionals hosted by ABSOLUT Vodka.

levisOne of our goals at HN is to analyze the representations of homosexuality in all forms of media as well as celebrate the artists, people, and companies whose portrayals or contributions have made a significant impact not only on the LGBT people but the community at large. For those reasons we lend our support and applause to a new initiative by GLAAD.

They will kick off their Advertising Media Program on Monday during a reception for LGBT advertising professionals and allies where GLAAD will honor Levi’s and Wells Fargo for their commitment to LGBT-inclusive advertising.

According to GLAAD President, Neil G. Giuliano:

“Words and images matter and can shatter stereotypes. Fair, accurate and inclusive media images prove that we are connected through common, human experiences… These are images that we – and advertisers – have a responsibility to share.”
