Catherine Opie can be considered, in many ways, a social documentarian — one who has used her skills behind the camera lens to reveal the faces of both the culturally celebrated and culturally suppressed groups within the framework of American society.  First garnering attention in the 90s for her portraiture of friends and partners in the LGBT and leather communities, she swung to documenting surfers and American high school football players and has now returned to some familiar subjects in her newest show, entitled “Girlfriends”, which opens this Thursday at the Gladstone Gallery.  This new collection of work represents both unprinted work from her early years as well as new color portraits, all exploring the nature of butch-dyke identity.  Included in the collection of images are notable public figures such as k.d. lang and Eileen Myles.  More photos included after the jump (may be NSFW).

Ryan McGinley is well-known for his ground-breaking, free-spirited depiction of American youth, epitomized by his yearly cross-country road trips that gave birth to a uniquely colored, frequently unclothed, vision of his generation.  For his most recent collection of photographs, opening to the public starting this Thursday in an exhibit entitled “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere”, McGinley removes his subjects from the outdoor wilderness and explores their expressivity in the classical, simple and controlled environment of the studio.  This is McGinley’s third solo show at Team Gallery, which will be hosting an opening reception Thursday, March 18th from 6-8pm. NSFW images after the jump.   All images copyright by Ryan McGinley, courtesy of Team Gallery.

Designer/photographer Hedi Slimane shares with us a shoot with model Brad Bowers, styled by Nicola Formichetti, from a recent collaboration with Vogue Homme Japan, with which he has worked frequently since the magazine’s launch last year.  It turns out Mr. Bowers isn’t just a pretender with the musical aspirations, as demonstrated in this YouTube video.  For more photos from the series, check out Hedi’s Fashion Diary.

PROCTER_DAYSTAR

Just in time for Paris Fashion Week, fashion photographer Simon Procter is staging an exhibition of a series of angelic Renaissance-inspired photomontages.  Procter’s training as a classical painter is clearly evident in his evocation of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, with a clear nod to some of the top fashion pieces of the season.  For those with a more philosophical interest in photography, a recent article in the New York Times discusses some of the controversy over the place of photoshop in photography in creating works like these which blur the lines between classical photography and painting.

Alexis Mabille’s recent foray into menswear has been praised by editors and bloggers alike for attention to detail and design.  So, it certainly didn’t go unnoticed this year when the couturier sent a flock of young men down his Paris runway wearing little more than a pair of skivvies and suspenders.  Not that we were complaining, certainly.  It turns out that the underwear are among the easier items to find an online retailer for, since his menswear has yet to be picked up by any U.S. stockists.  StudioHomme produced the tempting video above to advertise their collection of his wares.  Couture underwear… just what you needed, right?

Ado Les Scents

Perhaps it’s a bit early to be thinking of Spring, but this video lookbook for the new menswear line Ado Les Scents, by designer Hyun Yeu, certainly puts me in the mood.  Regarding the mission statement of the brand, Hyun writes:

The label vision manifests itself in elegant, high-quality menswear with innovative shapes and fabrics. ‘ADO LES SCENTS’ aims for a young-minded crowd. These men are not afraid to stand out and show their vulnerable side.

Hyun has also collaborated with video artist Joost Vandebrug on a piece entitled “Rain” which is also part of the Ado Les Scents marketing, but with a decidedly darker mood.

This past Thursday the HN crew dropped by Eastern Bloc to say hello to our favorite DJ, Bob Reyes, as he celebrated the 1yr anniversary of his Thursday night party CONTACT.  Open bar and the solid beats from the DJ booth were enough to encourage a cute crowd to brave the frigid temps outside.  Since we live and die by the status update, we asked our fellow partygoers to broadcast their thoughts for your enjoyment.

David Agbodji for Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein has quite the history of producing iconic photography as part of their advertising campaigns.  Bruce Weber produced numerous memorable and notorious images for Calvin Klein with the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Sabato, Jr., and launched the career of supermodel Kate Moss.  This year they’ve enlisted Steven Klein to shoot the amazing David Agbodji (Request), who also happens to be a rising photographer himself.  The result… well, I’ll let you judge for yourself.

Photographer Alex Prager has a particular talent for evoking a bygone Americana of the 60s and 70s, one which is especially influenced in subject matter by her upbringing in Los Angeles and stylistically by her affection for photographic giants like William Eggleston and Guy Bourdin.  Her female-heavy cast explores archetypal characters in a highly cinematic manner.   This week her work lands in NYC at the Yancey Richardson Gallery for a month-long show, entitled “Week-end” with an opening reception Thursday, Jan. 14th.

Homo-Neurotic favorites Luigi & Luca treat us to a preview of their most recent collaboration with a handful of Berlin designers, entitled Abnegation. Abnegation refers to the renunciation of personal interests in favor of another’s or the rejection of religious doctrine.  These ideas come to life in their images, which make occasional references to classical Christian iconography while simultaneously subverting it.  On the series’ title, the duo writes:

” Modern life is based on self-abnegation, but in an opposite sense from the religious way.  We deny a part of ourselves not achieve something higher, but to merely forget about it.  That part we renounce cannot really be called an attainment of progress, but the result of another failing religion.”

If you happen to be in Berlin for Fashion Week this year, the whole collection of images will be on display January 26th at 6pm at Abnormals Gallery.  Enjoy the preview, with more images after the jump.

Brodarte — Rodarte for Boys — hit retailer Opening Ceremony earlier this week.  The unusual choice of name aside, it seems paradoxical to introduce a small menswear line at this price point when most consumers are tightening purse strings and locking down the wallet.  At $2,760 a pop, these gossamer pieces don’t come cheap, but compared to the label’s womenswear pieces the boys are getting a steal.  Or are they?

Homo-Neurotic online photo-zine favorite, Guapo Magazine, has rolled out a new format and an impressive roster of content just in time for the new year.  It drops the first issue of its redesign complete with interviews featuring the talented photographer Mariano Vivanco, up-and-coming designer Asher Levine, and actor Edouard Collin — not to mention the editorials full of chicos guapos. Keep an eye on this site… it’s definitely going places.

Designer Manuel Albarran teamed up with Homo-Neurotic favorites, photographers Luca and Luigi, in a feature on otherworldly metal couture in a recent issue of Dazed & Confused.  If you’ve been a longtime follower of Homo-Neurotic, you’ll recall that we did an interview with Luca and Luigi a while back that’s definitely worth checking out.  More photos from the collection by following the link above.
