STEAM GIRL — I first crossed paths with Kate Siegel at NewFest. She was promoting her new indie-film Steam directed by Kyle Schickner and co-starring Ally Sheedy and Ruby Dee. In the film, Kate plays Elizabeth, a young college student from a devoutly catholic family who is coming to terms with her sexuality–she likes girls. And though she’s the lesbian girl next door on screen, don’t be fooled. In person Kate exudes that ever-coveted star quality. She reminds me of a young Angelia Jolie. Not the carefully-coiffed Brangelina whom we’ve come to both love and loathe, but the Angelina of 1998’s Play By Heart — a young woman with fire in her eyes and an entire career ahead. Kate chatted with us from Tennessee where she is wrapping up a summer Shakespeare stint. What sets Kate Siegel apart from the bevy of existing Hollywood Kates? Here’s a clue. It’s all about the shoes. Or shocking lack thereof. ANTONIO CERNA More… »

Brandon Herman Brandon Herman Brandon Herman

BRANDON HERMAN’S WORK has been compared to some of the biggest names in contemporary photography. So, it’s no surprise that his photographs retail in the thousands. The RISD grad, lives in LA (he has two assistants), and he has a solo show right now at Envoy Gallery. Did I mention he’s 24 years old? I chatted with Brandon last week about his tats, his evolving aesthetic, “boy art” and the blogger haters.

ART FAG MAG – Christopher Schulz and I met at the Chelsea Art Book Fair. He was toting copies of his wordless magazine PINUPS in a vintage Louis Vuitton zip-up portfolio. I’d seen him around and had heard about PINUPS from friends. He seemed aloof and uninterested in meeting me. But somehow I convinced him to do an interview. It seemed fitting to meet at Nowhere Bar, where PINUPS launched earlier this year. I wasn’t expecting to find him so affable and forthcoming, but after one margarita on the rocks and little Beyonce on the jukebox he had me hooked.– ANTONIO CERNA More… »

The New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC) ended last week, and I sat down with playwright Howard Walters (Extra Virgin) and executive producer Brandi Bravo to discuss their latest work. ‘Chaser‘ tells the story of two gay men on their first date. Dominick is HIV-positive. Val is negative. Both are lonely and desperate for intimacy. So how far will Val go to keep Dominick? Let’s ask the writer. — ANTONIO CERNA More… »

Manuel Muñoz Manuel Muñoz Manuel Muñoz

FULL DISCLOSURE: Not only is Manuel Muñoz a good friend of mine, he’s a brilliant writer. We traded emails with Muñoz recently. He has a new collection of short stories out, The Faith Healer of Olive Avenue. Before going off to Harvard and Cornell, Muñoz grew up in a small blue-collar town you’ve never heard of in southern California. I say this because his work often chronicles the complex four-way intersection of Chicano and Latino and Literary and Gay — and because he has been both shunned and lauded for tackling those unseemly hush-hush subjects. As we expected, Muñoz’s responses are both engaging and thoughtful — if not thorough. We discuss what it means to be a gay writer anymore — or a Latino writer — or a Chicano writer who happens to be gay — or any and none of the above. – ANTONIO CERNA
