Whether you love her or hate her, you have to appreciate Kathy Griffin. Like so many before her, (Cher, Madonna, Margaret Cho) she has latched onto the gay community with the earnest hope that her time, money, and loud voice will help us on the road to “equality.” It would be just plain rude to ignore her completely, being the gentlemen that we are. That being said her newly released DVD of her Bravo special “She’ll Cut a Bitch” is just funny.
Same formula: With impersonations of her mother and backstage gossip about awkward run-ins with celebrities. The jokes in general are good, but there were no real LOL moments of knee slapping hilarity. Not like in her 2006 special “Strong Black Woman” which was many facelifts and episodes of “My Life on the D-list” ago, where she talks smack about Star Jones, Celine Dion and getting fired from red carpet coverage. Also the whole thing is only 45 minutes which includes all the extra footage, which is barely enough time to really get her going, especially when her jokes tend to be impressively adlibbed anecdotes where the punch-line sometimes comes 15 minutes later.
But despite not being the funniest of her shtick it is still filled with some great insider stuff, like the recounting her visit to Cher’s mansion and her mother’s demand to just “tip it!” to get the last drop of wine out of its box. I, myself, prefer to just pull the aluminum bag out and squeeze the out the remaining. To each their own.
The truth though is Griffin’s career will not ride on this one DVD. Always the eternal fag-hag, she has proved nothing if not a knack for self-preservation. “She’ll Cut A Bitch” won’t make you like her and it won’t stop you from loving her. However if you are thinking of giving Kathy a chance I advise starting with her earlier Bravo stand-ups, when she really was a D-lister. It is just a little more loud, a little more vulgar, and much more scandalous.
