Ballet has long influenced women’s fashion collections, but what about the guys? Photographer François Rousseau captures the endless beauty of the male dancer in his new book, “Men in Motion: The Art and Passion of the Male Dancer” (Rizzoli, 2009). When fashion photographers look to ballet dancers for inspiration, we smile. For examples see Hedi Slimane’s holiday video, or Karl Lagerfeld’s costume designs for Ballet Russes, or Annie Leibowitz’s “Romeo and Juliet” inspired shoot for Vogue, or the spectacular Roberto Bolle on the cover of L’Officiel Hommes, as a subject for Bruce Weber, and in ads for Salvatore Ferragamo.
Rousseau’s collection (available on Amazon) includes a mix of classical ballet dancers, contemporary dancers, as well as Broadway stars, hip hop choreographers, and even acrobats. According to press materials, “Rousseau captures the innate eroticism of these artists as they pose, prepare, and perform.” And he’s not afraid of a li’l Chocolate? Where do we sign?
If Rousseau’s photo-style seems familiar, that’s because he’s the artist behind the those sexy Atelier ads as well as the polished Tudors promos with Jonathan Rhys Meyers for Showtime. 7 MORE IMAGES BELOW FOLD.
Nearly died when I saw this sexy tattoo. Translation anyone?
