Kanye West in Spike Jonze’s short film ‘We Were Once A Fairytale’ [NSFW]

If Where The Wild Things Are turned out a disappointing collaboration between filmmaker Spike Jonze and essayist Dave Eggers, than feast your eyes on this short film collision between Kanye West and Sofia Coppola’s ex husband.

“We Were Once A Fairytale” stars a strung out, intoxicated Kanye West as he verbally attacks party guests and waitrons while he meanders through the shadows of a nameless lounge that plays mostly his own music. After a casual sex romp with a stranger in a back room, Kanye wakes up to find himself passed out on the bathroom floor in cesspool of his own rose petal vomit. And then the film gets a little crazy–but frankly not crazy enough. The last few minutes of the film (where Kanye doesn’t speak) are the film’s best moments and probably the closest to a Jonze-inspired visual world.

This isn’t the comeback many would expect from a man the President labeled a “jackass” for his interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards earlier this year. But then again, Kanye’s motivations often allude general notions of social decorum.

In many ways, the film portrays Kanye in ways that some fans have now come to expect. And though it is unfair to paint such a superficial portrait of him, West does very little to dispute his rock-star-diva image through his narcissistic video blogs, backstage rants, and inappropriate on-the-record remarks.  If he walks like an asshole, then he must be…. Right?

“We Were Once A Fairytale” is very much like another semi-autobiographical film called “Ciao Manhattan,” wherein a strung out, intoxicated Eddie Sedgwick plays a cartoon character version of herself amidst a dreamland mansion in California. In that film, Sedgwick’s character overdoses and dies in a shocking parallel to the actor’s own life as a washed-up, former Andy Warhol superstar cum drug addict. So, does this mean that perhaps Kanye will undergo a similar film to reality parallel in which he rips out his intestines and finally sobers up to the truth that he has become a caricature of a human being? Probably not.

The empty bottle of Hennessy on his dressing room table tells a different story.
