Financing BeBe Zahara Benet’s Story

OUT OF AFRICA // Of the many memorable contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race, winner and reigning diva, BeBe Zahara Benet stands apart — if not for her charm, then for her impeccable poise. There is a new documentary about BeBe’s courageous story from Cameroon to the set of VH1 reality TV.

The problem is (and isn’t it always?): financing. Tonight Mimi Imfrust, DJ Barney, and friends from Fractured Atlas (a non-prof arts org) are hosting a benefit to raise finishing funds for the film to help spread BeBe’s message of positivity and self-acceptance out into the world.

Here’s the film synopsis according to the press release:

Nea Kudi Marshall is a goofy young Cameroonian man by day, and the staggeringly beautiful drag queen BeBe Zahara Benet by night. Since discovering his talent for female impersonation when he moved to Minneapolis from Africa only a handful of years ago, Nea has put everything he’s got into cultivating his craft. He his not a typical drag queen – his unique blend of dignity, spirituality, charisma and ambition set him apart from the others. Since 2006, we’ve been documenting his struggle to attain success on his own terms – while working to reconcile his unconventional career path with his family’s traditional values.
