Ubermensch + Matthew Camp = Uber Hot

Ubermensch? Is this for real? Luxury underwear for gay men with a secret Nazi fetish/aspiration? The website has text saying “Ubermensch, the New American”. It reads like a recruitment slogan for Aryan Nations Youth Action Core.

My qualm with this, other than that is seems like a completely stupid idea, is that if you’re going to work a concept then you really need to work it. It’s already counting against them that this is underwear which makes it seem all the more trivial. Nietzsche is no easy source of inspiration and if you’re going to reference him I want to be mesmerized. If I were art directing this I’d be watching Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will on repeat and grab that shit. But if you’re lazy enough to not think through such an irresponsible name then you’ll probably be too lazy to execute this concept.

Anyways, I can’t imagine how a line called “Ubermensch” isn’t going to look like International Male circa 1999. The teaser is unconvincing. I will be the first in line to snatch it up if it comes out decent but somehow, contrary to HommeBoy, I don’t think this will be the sort of the thing Rick, Yohji, and Tatsuro’s normal customers will get excited about.

I’m seeing underwear and dark overtones on the video. Im familiar with Leni Riefenstahl’s work which is similar to Herb Ritts , as he claims he took inspirations from and I see inspirations taken from these known photographers . It will be mediocre if this was done exactly as Ritts andRiefenstahl’s too “PREDICTABLE”. It doesn’t make sense to see athletes flexing and posing that shit is CALVIN KLEIN like Riefenstahl’s video . I hate to see another brand that looks like that . We’ve been bombarded with those images in the last 25 years.

This is very very dark and adding the Nazi name UBERMENSCH to it makes it more cryptic . This is not even in the realm of fashion. This is somewhere else we dont know like the new avant garde designers we’re seeing these day. Funny as it may sound this is interplanetary!!!!! ALIEN thats why we’re at the edge of our seat trying to understand this label. Who knows these days designers do it for their own satisfaction. Either you like it or you stick with Kleins or Hanes or none at all.

I agree Owens,Yamamoto and the likes will do it differently, so this in itself stands on its own. I disagree that this reads mens international male, the underwear industry has been unfairly dragged to the gutter and IM is just a hideous magazine/catalog. This designer should really be careful that it doesn’t read that ! I am curious what the rest of the clothes / collection looks like. Let’s give this brand a chance as it unfolds. I give it an 8 out of 10 for being different , ambitious and unapologetic ! it’s not even classy or commercial it reads “ART” raw and honest !

And yes it made me think what underwear I should be wearing under my Rock Owens Knit pant. I hope this remains underground !

i have mixed reactions to this video and what the brand stands for.
ubermensch ( german) + underwear that has brazilian , japanese styling and definitely androgynous. it’s everything and unpredictable. Hahaha i think this designer is taking us deep into our subconscious , our fears our likes , our fetishes . keep challenging us !! Keep us thinking! i get this one – it’s androgyny for now then what’s in store for fall 2009 clothing ?

Rick and Yohji for sure never meant to align themselves as to whatever label we want to box them in. So is this new label ubermensch. Through a naked eye you can say they sahre the same DNA. But that’s just us consumers. I initially felt politically incorrect to desire these underwear being white and partly of german descent but i realize it’s just clothes the design is beyond how we perceive it . I don’t care much for the sound track of the behind the scene, they can do better ! The sound on the preview is HOT! What is the title and who is the artist of this music ? It’s sound yogayish.

I see the work as EVOLVING. Images represents an embryo readjusting it self in an amniotic fluid (the sheer black fabric) or coming in to a new way of being / REBIRTH. Its gender bending, a touch of femininity is the new masculinity. Psychologically speaking, it requires more balls to be like that.

On the other hand uberminch a german word, challenging dark nazi macho international image with the dark/mysterious see thorough feminine design & mannerism, what a paradox!

Artists borrow ideas and get inspired from each other that’s what makes an era in art & design. the key is to have a signature style. Why would any body want to see the replication of established-brand work?

Calling designer of UBERMENSCH. Heimler made a good point you need to cast a hot black model on your next campaign or add more images using exotic none white models. I guess casting a hot white GAY man is not enough to cremate the nazi word or even give this old name a new meaning .Abdus’ comment is valid , looking beyond the underwear. I didn’t even think sheer fabric is REBIRTH!!! lol . We have some intellectuals critiquing this new label. Interesting to watch what will happen to this baby label.
