CAT CALLS // A serendipitous thing happened to me this morning. As I was opening the door to my office a woman yelled out for help. I turned left to find that a blonde, 20-something woman was indeed trapped in a window well — a narrow opening in the sidewalk that allows light into the basement apartments of London Terrace.
She’d jumped in when she heard the cries of a small, black kitten who’d been trapped in the basement window bars. But the kitten had scratched the woman and now wounded she couldn’t climb out.
A gentleman, never walks away from a distress call. So I put my computer down and tried pulling her out. Fail. We tried a different angle. Fail. Then, my boss suggested we use our office step ladder which worked perfectly. Success. But the kitten was still in the well, crying, wet, and dirty. His original rescuer had rushed off. The Security Gaurds, bless them, had no luck taunting the feline away–they yelled, they kicked, they clapped. Fail.
[ASIDE: SPCA no longer picks up animals, but Animal Control will hold animals for 48 hours.]
Well, gentlemen also never turns his back on a creature in pain. So my friend, another gent, jumped into the stairwell. Grabbed the kitten with a blue plastic trash bag and he climbed out of the well. At which point, he and I rushed the kitten to West Chelsea Veterinary via Taxi. There, the Vet checked out the trembling kitten and cleared her for fleas, worms, or rabies (we also confirmed the kitten’s gender). What a cute kitty.
Our little Chelsea find is now resting calmly in a plastic crate on 26th and 7th Ave waiting to be picked up by CityCritters — an NYC-based cat rescue and adoption non-prof. BUT, our little furry one STILL needs a home. So please pass this along in hopes that “Chelsea Kitten” will be adopted. She’s black with a white belly, and white whiskers and brows. She’s about 6 months, cute as can be, and seems to be friendly.
Cats breed at an extremely fast rate. Female cats go into heat in as quickly as 5 months — and during mating season a cat can breed up to 3 times and any female cats in those litters will also enter into heat in five months–starting the cycle anew. That’s why it’s important to spay or neuter one’s pets. Please reach out to West Chelsea Vet or CityCritters today, so our little one can find a home.
