Checking out the Q/B/R Party

Recently, I had a chance to email with Stephen aka “Sir Loins” about the monthly Q.B.R. (Queers, Beers & Rears party — which he hosts along with Go-Karff & A.Martini. I also chatted with Daniel Erickson of MKNG FRNDZ. So I merged their answers into a sort of interview. check it out. All photographs by Brooklyn-based artist Keith Greiger.

How long has the party been going on?
SIR: We started in Feb 2007 at Cyn Lounge in Williamsburg as a weekly party (no bands, resident and guest DJs, summer BBQ), then in May 2007 we started a monthly party with bands, DJs, and gogo boys at the Cake Shop (Lower East Side). We stopped doing the weekly in Sept 2007, and have since kept doing the monthly. So… we’ve been going for 2 years.

DE: February 7th was the party’s 2 year anniversary celebration! We were very excited and honored to be asked to play.  Any QxBxRx we play becomes our favorite show & the 7th was no exception.

Why is this party different from other Manhattan queer parties?
SIR: It’s NYC’s only homopunk party with bands, DJs, and gogo boys.

DE: This isn’t Chelsea. They really put together a party for the rest of us. Cheap drinks, good music, a relaxed atmosphere low on pretention. There is a vegan cafe and record store upstairs as well. I mean chances are while your  at QxBxRx you wont smell cologne. You’ll  smell sweat. You’re not really gonna here Madonna or Britney (not that there is anything wrong with a little of that!). So people dont come to QBR and request Beyonce’s “single ladies” –It’s a rock n roll party.

Who goes to this party?
SIR: We’ve had John Cameron Mitchell, Michel Schmidt (Squeezebox founder), Donita Sparks and Dee Plakas of L7, Miss Guy, Theo, and a slew of people that we consider amazing. But, we could care less about getting celebrities in there. It’s a party for the people.

DE: Well Sam & Lindsay keep begging to DJ but i dont think Cakeshop has the budget.  Haha!! Seriously its not really about that.  Its a very supportive group of people any time I’ve ever gone. It’s a great scene.

What kind of music will i hear when i go there?
SIR: Punk, rock, rockabilly, garage, dance, electro, etc.

DE: Well any number of the awesome bands Karff, Sir Loins & Andrew get to play plus punk, dance punk,  rock n roll, girl groups, soul, anything really that has a filthy beat and you can shake your ass to. Up the punx that love to dance!!

What’s the general atmosphere like at QBR?
DE: Its like an awesome basement show with a bar that your parents stocked for you and are totally cool with it!!!

SIR: We feel like it’s a really fun time, basement punk show meets dirty gay dance party with sweat, beer, cute boys, a mixed crowd, and tattooed rocker boys galore.
