Paris Men’s Fashion Week Fall 2009: Lanvin by Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver.
Imagine that only 3 years ago Lanvin was no more than bourgeois office suiting and frenchifed shirting. I suppose that’s the magic you get from an ex-Beene assistant once handpicked by St.Laurent and a Paris menswear veteran steeped in the subtle nuance of contemporary romance ala Dior Homme.
Not too much to say about this one that I haven’t said already, another knockout collection from the boys at Lanvin (Alber and Lucas). What I love is their rigorous execution of the Lanvin look just as distinctive as Alber’s concoctions for the women’s line. Each season they interpret it adding to the vocabulary and to the Lanvin Homme wardrobe. This round sported a bit harder and sharper look, a slight update on the softness that’s been pervasive since the line’s inception. It’s a prime example of the kind of cache a talented designer can add to a brand and the force of a singular creative vision. As Lanvin expands under Alber’s careful watch the label looks prime to ascend to an international profile of mammoth proportions. It’s a rare case when time becomes stretched a long a plane and the delineations of past and present are so resolutely distinct. It’s the old giving way to the new and it’s the unique and the sincere that carries the most conviction. It’s a time for change which makes the finale’s humble but evocative gesture all the more fitting and indicative of the energy in the air.
Curious, wonder how much the Obama-Lanvin coat will retail for?
