Patrik Ervell | New York Fashion Week

Patrik Ervell | Ervell has nailed his presentation using the sparse and unsullied space at Pier 59 studios. The clothes echoed the modest setting, his light color palette washed out even further by sharp daylight pouring through the windows. He’s refined his DNA always working with menswear standards; American sportswear and military gear, and this season Ervell is said to have been inspired by the Memphis Group, an Italian furniture design collective that embraced a wildly imaginative pop aesthetic in the 80’s. That allusion revealed itself in little more than a few enlivened stripes, bold on a suit or in an applied pocket with alternating orientation. The effect won’t linger in your memory but neither is Ervell the kind of designer to rely on obvious sensation. His work is subtle and that is where it shines. Ervell has subverted the idea of normalcy, in both his clothes and his casting, the pool from which he selects and edits down his ideas are so far removed from our immediate recognition it becomes new and electric despite being readily available in our immediate popular culture (if we would only care to look). His take on tradition can be blunt and a lazy eye will not be able to move beyond it but a careful and honest perspective will find something covetable in Ervell’s conception of masculinity, in his streamlined air jackets, his handmade blazers, and his slim trousers. It’s all so simple but it’s the simplest solutions that are often overlooked.
