On Sunday, while I sipped mimosas and watched the pride procession from the shelter of my friend’s apartment, hundreds of gay activists gathered on the other side of the world to march and raise awareness about gay rights in a country where homosexuality is illegal. Celebrations where held in 3 Indian cities including Calcutta, Bangalore and New Delhi.

From the International Herald Tribune:

The marches came days before the Delhi High Court is expected to hear arguments on overturning a law against homosexual sex that dates to the British colonial era. The law, which forbids sexual acts “against the order of nature,” carries punishment of up to 10 years in prison

From the BBC:

Brought in under British rule, the legal system recognises gay and lesbian relationships “as an unnatural offense”.

In some Indian states people have taken their own lives because they have found the law unbearable.
